Welcome to the Deakin Occupational Therapy (OT) Practice Education Program site

This website provides Practice Education information and training for OT supervisors and educators who are supervising Deakin OT students on practice education placement. The website also provides general information on the Deakin Occupational Therapy and practice education programs if you are interested in hosting an OT student in your organisation and want to become one of our placement partners.

Welcome, my name is Nikki Lyons and I am the Practise Education Coordinator for the Deakin Occupational Therapy courses in Australia.
The requirement that OT students complete a minimum of 1000 hours of practise education is mandated through the accreditation standards at Deakin.

The 1000 hours of Practice Education is embedded in units across our courses. Practice Education provides students with the opportunity to integrate the academic component of learning into their practise. It also facilitates further development of the knowledge, skills, behaviours and attributes that are required to graduate as an OT and be registered with our Regulatory agency, AHPRA. A unique aspect of the Deakin course is that every student will have a practise education experience in every year of the course and our placement partners are crucial to supporting many of those experiences that our students will have. If a Deakin student is placed with a partner organisation, you will be required to provide feedback using the Student Practice Evaluation Form or SPEF. In addition, every student and supervisor will be allocated A Deakin Practise Education Facilitator or DPEF to support each placement. The role of the DPEF is to liaise and support both you and the student during the placement. All DPEFS are qualified OTs who have experience with supporting both students and supervisors during placement. DPEFS can also guide students to access other University support services as required. There are benefits to being 1 of Deakin OT placement partners, including access to our Lunchtime Education webinar series, our newsletter and the Deakin Library. I hope this brief introduction to practise education at Deakin is helpful.
