Practice Education Focus
The first trimester of Year 1 focuses on preparation for practice education and understanding of the diversity of occupational therapy practice. Students experience a range of practical workshops and site visits.

Practice Education Focus
The second trimester of Year 1 focuses on students becoming familiar with the role of the OT within the health care team and provides an opportunity for students to commence practicing key skills in a clinical environment.

Students will experience their first block clinical placement.

Part time three-week placement (10 days)

Practice Education Focus
Second year focuses on providing the opportunity for all second-year students to practice key practice education related skills in a standardized simulated environment prior to their third-year and fourth-year clinical placements.

Students will experience a week of on campus simulated practice education (full time) supported by experienced OT clinicians.

Practice Education Focus
The second simulated placement builds from learning in the first trimester.
Students will experience a week of simulated telehealth practice education (full time) supported by experienced OT clinicians.

Practice Education Focus
Students will further develop specific practice skills with a focus on communication, information gathering and documentation.
Students will experience a clinical placement where they will be expected demonstrate key OT skills.

Practice Education Focus
The Community Based Practice Education (CBPE) program provides third year students the opportunity to develop and lead student-driven occupational therapy services within the community. CBPE provides opportunities for students to develop skills and competencies which are not generally covered in traditional occupational therapy programs, such as consultancy, community development, health promotion and population focused health education.

Students will experience an 8 week practice education placement (full time) with a student peer in a school setting. The placement will have a population health focus, and students will be supported by a qualified occupational therapist via a long arm supervision model who will provide support and complete the SPRF-R2 assessment.

The CBPE school-based program does not require an occupational therapist to be located on site to complete supervision, however, Placement Provider schools are required to orientate the student to the placement environment and maintain regular contact to ensure the student is supported and progressing.

Practice Education Focus
The focus is to build on and extend competency development from earlier practice education enabling students to apply occupational therapy reasoning processes to a range of practice situations; complete the attainment of skills according to OT Australia professional competency requirements; develop management skills related to practice; demonstrate effective professional communication skills; reflect on learning outcomes for their studies. Students will learn to self-evaluate; and discuss their individual professional capabilities according to OT Australia accreditation, be professionally accountable, and articulate professional and personal frames of reference related to occupational therapy practice.
Students will experience a 8 – 10 week full time or part time clinical placement, where they demonstrate consolidation of key skills.

Practice Education Focus
The I&E Project Placement is the final practice education placement for the Occupational Therapy Program at Deakin University. This unit is designed to extend occupational therapy practice knowledge and skills by contributing to innovation in real practice settings, to address current issues and challenges in OT services. Students will, either individually or as part of a group, plan and/or design an innovation. Students will then implement this innovation on a pilot basis, and evaluate the success of the pilot implementation, providing the service with a full report of the project design and outcomes.

Each student is allocated 72 hours over a 11-week period. Attendance days and times will be flexible and arranged in consultation with the agency.

Example projects;

• Designing a new therapy group
• Develop a new screening assessment
• Revising or reviewing an existing assessment, intervention or program
• Develop a specific education program or package for staff/patients
• Develop a care pathway from referral to discharge
• Develop guidelines for the use of a new piece of equipment or device

72 hours of project times across 11 weeks.
8 hours to attend and present at conference.
Student attendance and format is negotiated with supervisor pertinent to the project
