Deakin University provides Insurance Cover for Students Completing a Placement Experience. Please refer to the Practice Education Manual for further details.

Students are not permitted to source their own placements. It is important that placement providers are negotiating with a single university representative who is familiar with the associated policies and procedures.

Before commencing placement, students must produce evidence of mandatory checks and vaccination status and attend a compulsory Practice Education Orientation Session. This session covers topics such as confidentiality and professional expectations. Students are required to complete a Student Code of Conduct form and a Confidentiality Agreement form. The Confidentiality Agreement form must be provided to the Agency’s Practice Educator (PE) alongside the Student Emergency Details form on the first day of placement.

When an issue is identified contact your allocated Deakin Practice Education Facilitator (DPEF) ASAP.

Management strategies will then be collaboratively developed between you, the DPEF and the student. This process is closely monitored by the DPEF.

Students are permitted to drive agency/provider fleet cars while on placement. They must always have their driver’s license accessible. Probationary drivers are required to bring and display their “P” plates and adhere to the probationary driver requirements. Students may be asked to use their own cars during placement; however, any such request from the Placement Provider should be discussed with the Deakin Practice Education Facilitator (DPEF). It is important to note that student vehicles are not covered by Deakin’s insurance program, regardless of their use for Deakin business or study. For information on insurance coverage for students on placement, please refer to “Insurance for Students on Placements or Work Experience.” Additionally, Deakin does not reimburse students for petrol or toll expenses incurred while using their personal vehicles on placement. Lastly, students are not permitted to transport consumers in their own vehicles.

Vehicle use is governed by the policies of our placement providers, and Deakin University.

If a student is absent during their placement, they must inform their supervisor by phone at the expected placement start time. Additionally, the student must notify their DPEF via phone or email. The student should provide an approximate return date for planning purposes and submit either a Medical Certificate or a Statutory Declaration for any missed day of placement.

This innovative program provides practice education via student directed occupational therapy services to communities primarily in the Barwon Southwestern region. The program provides the opportunity for students to develop skills not generally experienced within traditional occupational therapy environments, in schools using a long-arm supervision model.

This is the assessment form by which all Deakin students are evaluated during placement. The SPEF-R2 is a standardised assessment tool that has been adopted by many OT programs across Australia. It is available to students via CloudDeakin. Practice Educators/Supervisors will be given the option to use either an online or a hard copy version of the tool.
